The county was established in 1777 and founded in 1778.
It is named for Natural Bridge, a notable landmark in the southern portion of the county.

These records are, unfortunately, not free in Rockbridge County. First copies of birth records, death records, marriage certificates and divorce records cost $12 for each certificate.
NOTE - A person must visit between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 P.M EST on Monday - Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m EST on Friday to obtain records in person in Rockbridge County. If a person wishes to obtain documents, they must bring some form of photo identification. Examples contain state IDs or driver's licenses.
