Prince William County has two correctional facilities as of 2023: a modular jail and a detention center. Located at 14873 Dumfries Rd, the adult detention center is a medium-security facility that serves the county and towns such as Haymarket, Triangle, Dumfries, and Occoquan. The detention center maintains all records of incarcerated inmates and releases this on request (juveniles not included). Residents can call the center at (703) 792-5811 during the day and (703) 792-6420 after hours. The office opens Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (except for holidays)

The Adult Detention Center only holds inmates sentenced for one to 12 months. How to Visit a Prince William County Inmate
Inmates at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center are permitted one non-contact visit each week. The prison only allows video visitations, and visitors must be registered on the inmate's permitted list prior to the date. Registration for visits is done using the facility's online scheduling platform. Depending on the inmate's status and type of visitor, visits may last 20 minutes or up to 60 minutes.
While at the facility, visitors must follow the facility's regulations for dressing. These include:
- Visitors may not wear see-through clothing
- Visitors may not wear skirts or dresses shorter than 5" above the knee
- Visitors may not wear any shirt, slack, or skirt with high slits
- Visitors may not wear any revealing clothing that exposes the chest or stomach.
Prior to being admitted into the facility, visitors must present a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license (or a school ID for minors). Visitors are also not permitted to bring any food, drink, or personal items (except for IDs, glasses, and keys) into the visitation lobby. Any visiting minor must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

Inmates at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center can send and receive unlimited mail from friends and family. However, all incoming and outgoing mail must be written per regulations. This includes refraining from adding inappropriate pictures, plastic cards, glitter, confetti, lipstick, or other markings.

Envelopes must also include the sender's complete return address. Any incoming mail that violates any of these conditions is returned to the sender. Although inmates can receive newspapers, the correctional facility only permits newspapers mailed directly by the publisher.
