The Virginia State Police Department governs the maintenance and dissemination of criminal history records of persons resident within its jurisdiction. In compliance with state laws, the Arlington County Police Department provides public access to full criminal history records and processes requests for county-level background checks. Interested persons may request records from either the state or county police department.
How to get Criminal Records
The Arlington County Police Office of Records processes requests for criminal history background checks of county residents. Criminal records issued by the office will include conviction information as well as records of arrests (of the subject) made within the county. How to get Police Records
The Arlington County Police Department generates and maintains police and accident reports for incidents within the county. Applicants must be listed as the victim, reported party or complainant in order to request and obtain county police reports. How to Find the Sex Offender Registry and Other Sex Offender Information
All information regarding sex offenders and persons convicted for crimes against minors is managed by the Virginia State Police Department. The department maintains a Sex offender & Crimes Against Minors Registry with which members of the public may find relevant information about sex offenders in Arlington County. Offenders may be searched by name, designated zip code, a selected address radius, county, city and their proximity to a school. Interested persons may also subscribe to the VSP community notification system to be kept up to date about sex offenders in their vicinity.
How to Find Inmate and Jail Information
The Arlington County Sheriff's Office is the primary custodian of all inmate-related information for the county's designated Detention Facility. Information regarding current inmates in the ACDF can be accessed using the Arlington County Sheriff's Office Inmate Query which is open to public use. Inmates may be searched by name, booking date or subject number. Other queries about inmate welfare, visiting and contact information can be found on the Detention Facility Information Center.

Where and How to get Court Records
Arlington County Circuit Court provides public access to non-confidential court records and files. To expedite record retrieval the office of the Clerk of Circuit Court provides remote access court records of cases filed from 2010 till date. Older court records may be obtained by making in-person queries to the office of the clerk at:

Interested persons may register for, and then request court records using the Circuit Courts TrueFiling System. Requestors will receive printable documents, served electronically at no cost. Certified documents are processed by the Clerk's office for a fee of $2, plus $0.5 per copy made.
On the other hand, certified legal practitioners may request secure remote access to all court records by subscribing to use the TrueFiling Database. Intending subscribers would be required to provide a copy of their Virginia State Bar card and pay a $120/year subscription fee

Vital Records
State-wide vital records are managed and issued by the Virginia State Division of Vital Records. As per state laws, the Arlington County Department of Human Services manages records of county deaths and provides copies of death certificates to eligible requestors. However, all other vital records are only accessible through the Richmond Division of Vital Records.
Where and How to get Divorce Records
The Virginia Department of Health receives and processes requests for records of divorces granted within its jurisdiction.
Interested persons may access divorce records from the office Division of Vital Records by making in-person or mail queries. Requestors are required to provide the names of divorcees and the date and place of the divorce. Supplicants would also be required to disclose their reason for requesting the record and their relationship with one or both of the divorced parties.
Mail-in queries must include a written request with all of the above mentioned information, as well as copies of the government-issued ID of the requestor.

Where and How to get Marriage Records
Records of all marriages licensed by Arlington County are managed and disseminated by the Vital Records Division of the Department of Health. Persons interested in accessing marriage records are required to meet some ID requirements as per state laws. The acceptable identification documents are listed here
Eligible requestors may make in-person or mail queries to the Vital Records Division of the department. Mail-in requests must include a written query which should indicate the names of the spouse, the place and date of marriage, the reason for the request and the relationship of the requestor with the registrants. Requests must also include a $12 cheque or money order payment to cover search and copy fees.

Where and How to get Birth and Death Records
The Vital Records Division of the Virginia Department of Health is the primary custodian of both birth and death records of the state. However, death records are also maintained and issued by the Arlington County Department of Human Services.
To obtain a birth or death record from the Virginia Department of Health, requestors are required to be verifiably related to the registrant/deceased, or be court-mandated/approved. Supplicants may make in-person or mail queries to the office, which will require a search and retrieval payment of $12, any of the accepted identification documents as well as information regarding the registrant including;
- Their name at birth or death.
- The date & place of birth or death.
- Their Mother’s maiden name and father’s name.
- The requesters relationship to the person on the certificate and the reason for requesting the certificate.

In addition to government agencies, county public records may also be obtained from third-party websites. These non-government platforms come with intuitive tools that allow for expansive searches. Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
Are Property Records Open to the Public in Arlington County?
The Virginia Freedom of Information Act allows all interested persons to request and obtain copies of property records in Arlington County. County residents and the general public can contact the county's record keeper for desired property information.
Where and How to Find Property Records in Arlington County
The Arlington County Department of Real Estate Assessments keeps recorded information on properties in the county. The department conducts an annual appraisal of all real properties for the uniform distribution of applicable real estate taxes. This appraisal is informed by the property's current condition, values of similar properties, costs of operation and repairs or improvements, and potential earnings from rent. All information generated from these appraisals is available as property records.
